CBCT and X-ray examination of teeth in Poznań

It is increasingly being said that cone tomography has revolutionized dentistry. It is a modern and very safe imaging technique, used to observe the structures of teeth and maxillary sinuses, but not only. The test has helped take dental diagnostics to a whole new level – in addition to 2D X-rays, CBCT allows for highly accurate 3D images.

At MEDflow, we perform CBCT and dental x-rays for a fee; we do not perform examinations under the National Health Fund. You can make an appointment for the examination overnight, and moments after the examination the patient receives a DVD with the images.

Cone-beam tomography, also known as Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) or cone-beam tomography, is a method that allows imaging the tissues of the jaw and its surrounding areas, such as the paranasal (maxillary) sinuses, in 3D. The examination takes only a few moments, but produces highly accurate images that can then be used in dentistry, but also in ENT.

This type of tomography has a very good reputation. Why? Because it is very safe, allowing the patient to be exposed to less radiation than a traditional X-ray or CT scan. According to studies, radiation doses are up to ten times lower, compared to traditional maxillofacial tomography. In addition, better images can be obtained in a shorter exposure time.

CBTC tomography is applicable to hard tissues such as teeth and bones. However, it does not provide as much detailed information when it comes to soft tissues (nerves, lymph nodes, muscles). In our laboratory, we can take 2D panoramic x-rays of teeth (pantomogram) and 3D tomography of teeth, e.g. for root canal treatment of teeth (endodontics) or the entire jaw or mandible.

CBCT CT gets its name from the fact that it uses an X-ray beam that takes the shape of a cone during the scan. How long does the examination last and what does it look like? It does not require much time and usually lasts a few tens of seconds. The patient’s head is immobilized during this time, and the radiation-generating apparatus and detector rotate around it in a 360-degree range. During the examination, quite a few images are produced, which are then combined in a computer to produce an accurate 3D image of the area being examined. As already mentioned, the dose of X-rays the patient receives is relatively low, so CBCT of the jaw and head is considered very safe.

Computed tomography and CBCT

Classical computed tomography in medicine has its origins in the 1970s. CBCT tomography, on the other hand, is like its younger sister, having begun to be used in Europe in the second half of the 1990s, and in the US since 2001. Both work very similarly, using X-rays, and both are also indispensable for diagnosis and treatment planning.

CBCT is most often used to image teeth. It is also worth remembering that, for the safety of patients, the examination is performed on the basis of an appropriate referral from a doctor. This is to prevent exposure to excessive doses of radiation.

Indications for CBCT and dental X-ray scans

Cone-beam tomography (CBTC) and dental x-rays are commonly used in the diagnosis and treatment planning of various diseases within the skull. Among other things, it is ordered for patients who are preparing for implants.

The list of indications for its performance includes:

As you can see, CBCT examination can be ordered not only by dentists. ENT surgeons also use it, and increasingly oncologists or even orthopedists. If a doctor believes that in a particular case three-dimensional images can be useful in the diagnostic process, he or she can order a CBCT scan for the patient.

Due to radiation, contraindications to the examination may include pregnancy or the young age of the patient. Children are more sensitive to X-rays than adults, so in the case of the youngest, the rationale for a CBCT examination should always be well considered. The priority is the patient’s welfare and health.

Does the study require specialized preparation?

Whether the CBCT scan was ordered by a dental or ENT specialist, in most cases the patient does not need to prepare specially for it.

The only requirement is to remove any metal objects that may be in the head area and mouth, such as, for example, during the CT scan:

Their photo enables good quality images to be taken, without artifacts, which in turn makes it possible for the doctor to get more information and data from the finished images
