Bone density test

Under the name densitometry is a bone density test (also known as DXA or DEXA scan). It is painless and non-invasive, and extremely important, especially for the elderly patient. Through this test, the doctor obtains information about bone tissue, and can thus, for example, detect osteoporosis, determine what stage it is in, and monitor the treatment of this disease.

At MEDflow, we perform bone density testing using an instrument from American medical equipment manufacturer GE Healthcare. All tests are paid, we do not perform tests under the National Health Fund. You will find free appointments with us overnight, and you will receive the result at the end of your visit.

Take care of your bones with MEDflow and schedule an examination.

Bone density testing is a quick and painless test

A quick and simple bone mineral density test can protect patients from future bone fractures. It is definitely worth performing densitometry – it is painless and non-invasive, and allows not only to detect any abnormalities in the bone tissue, but also to determine the risk of diseases such as osteoporosis and osteopenia. This makes it possible to take the necessary preventive measures in a timely manner, or, if necessary, to implement appropriate treatment for the disease in question.

How is bone mineral density checked?

Densitometry testing helps doctors determine bone density. Small doses of X-rays are used for this purpose. The entire procedure usually takes no more than a dozen minutes. Before the test itself, the person who performs it measures the patient’s height and weight. Then the person being examined is asked to take a certain position on the measuring table, where the examination will be performed (using a specialized apparatus). It is very important to remain motionless during the bone density assessment.

No special preparation is needed for the densitometry test. However, before it is performed, any metal items on the body, such as jewelry, eyeglasses, hearing aids, etc., should be removed. The test usually covers those bone structures that are at greatest risk of fracture in the case of osteoporosis. For example, these are:

If necessary (for example, in the diagnosis of osteoporosis), the doctor may decide to assess bone density in other regions of the body as well, such as chest densitometry. As already mentioned, densitometry is a very safe test, and the dose of X-rays the patient receives during it is small.

Indications for densitometry

Densitometry testing is worth performing in the following groups of patients, among others:

If the results are normal, the patient can undergo the test again after about two years. If the doctor decides otherwise, or in case of diseases, the densitometry should be repeated earlier. It is recommended that for women, the first densitometry test should be performed after the age of 50, and for men, after the age of 60.

Frequently asked questions

48 hours before the test, calcium-containing supplements should be discontinued. We recommend comfortable, athletic clothing without metal parts and the removal of jewelry.

The result of the densitometry test should be discussed with the referring physician – this may be a family doctor, orthopedist, rheumatologist or oncologist.

The densitometry test is completely painless and non-invasive. The patient lies still, while the camera scans selected parts of the body during this time.

Yes, we also perform densitometry tests in children from the age of 5.
In patients aged 5 to 20, the test includes the lumbosacral (L/S) section of the spine.
From the age of 20, the test can be performed in two locations – the femoral neck and the L/S spine.
